The Awakening Heart

A sojourn in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea

In mid-1977 an abiding interest in Old World, non westernized cultures led me to Papua New Guinea, and into the Southern districts of the Highlands.
The photographic portrait of forest magicians, sorcerers, dandies, bachelor-cult leaders, funerary rites, men, women, children, depict a Stone Age people on the cusp of acculturation and irrevocable change.
